My country does not allow
the existence of unwed mothers
First of all, local time on October 8th, that day I have to
laugh at a stupid thing. A bunch of foreigners needed to be told
THAT Chinese person cannot attend to receive any award. I would
first question, what is the use of trying to do the impossible.
As for what happened that day, about the award, it is not here
to say.
Today is Oct. 10th Beijing Time, two days after the strange
group of foreigners tossed over the Prize.
This morning, two unknown district officials (the fact is they
do not present me any proof of identity documents) , the one in
charge is a middle-aged woman, come to my house in the name of
census.
Since they are from the Census Bureau, it is easy to understand,
they come because of my daughter "Pretty".
The chief unknown official has in her hand several sheets of
paper, one of which is covered with the red seal. During the
process I do not see what it says. She confronts me and says,
you see the policy is printed here. I flatly refuse to look at
the paper. I say I do not want to see, that is your job, you can
say anything.
She shows her empathetic woman's gesture and says to me, in your
situation you can get married, just marry, (even) the
application for residency is free.
I say, I am not getting married.
Flipping through the pile of papers she finds a number and says,
look I understand that in your case, before the 15th of this
month pay a fine of eleven thousand Yuan plus odd ends. She
continues, right now is the lower rate, after the 15th will be a
higher rate,,, . Mother, yeah, this thing is like selling goods,
now, there is discount ah,,,
(Now I would like to ask, if they didn't have hope to convince
me to accept the penalty of giving the money, why would they
have come all that way 10 kilometers to see me. Pretty was born
4 years ago, why did they not come then?)
I say, eleven thousand is not expensive, I love my child so. She
is more than any money, that is, even a million is too little,
but I have not worked for several years. No one can help me any.
The commune and the society has not shown their concern about me,,,
She says, I can't care, you'll have to pay a fine in accordance
with the policy. Then in a forceful tone she says, do you know
you broke the law, you violated the marriage law, the court
could punish you,,,
I'm dizzy. Yeah, I say, let the court come to me, here you
should not be the one to talk to me about that. I have the right
to give birth, my child has the right to live.
She says, all faults are caused by your own doing. You have no
right to have children. The marriage law provides that one gets
married to have a child. Our country does not allow an unwed
mother.
This time I completely understand. What! I live in this country
as a woman, and I do not have reproductive rights- no right to
be a mother. When I was close to 40 years old becoming a mother
is against the law. I violated the law, and this implies my
daughter does not have the right to life,,, . But for whatever,
I have only three ways, first, and quickly get married. Find
some man to adopt the child, anyone can do. Second, do the best
sensible thing- pay the fine before the discount runs out on the
15th. When I miss this chance, the price goes up, and that time,
it is me to deserve the misfortune. There is another way out
according to the census chief official. She says, why a child is
born so long ago and the problem is not yet solved, let it
continue to be unresolved (when she says that is she thinking on
her own ....),,,
When she says that if I do not immediately pay the fine,
Pretty's problem with her Residency will indefinitely not be
able to be resolved, I ask her, even you cannot solve, then tell
me, who can solve it then.
She insists that it is not her responsibility other than telling
me to pay the fines. That is, all my life problems, I and the
children life or death, it is not her concern. She is
responsible to present the fine and her emphasis that I violated
the law. She is just stressing in our country unwed mothers are
not allowed.
I repeatedly ask, if it is not her concern, then who would care?
What government department's affair,,,?
In the end, when she leaves, she does not answer my question. I
still do not know if it is not her concern, whose concern is it.
She leaves, I suddenly remember the group of October 8th
foreigners must have done something extremely stupid. According
to my superstitious mind, it is seeing the news, after two days
that gives me the bad luck.
Who represents the Government to rescue me from the census
official saying that: Our country does not allow unmarried
mothers. I am not married and having a child is illegal. I am a
single mother is my mistake. Before the 15th I must pay out less
than twelve thousand Yuan, the discounted fine, otherwise the
consequences could be not knowable. Pretty may never have a
residency, perhaps the court will trial me, and more frightening
things could happen beyond my imagination,,,
The cruelest is the lingering death of torture, I do not want a
lingering death, quick death seems to be the enjoyable,,, (oh,
yes, I did not ask for the right and benefit)
I record my experience here first. In the future, I am not sure
I can keep on. I may make inappropriate actions, such as to see
that official in her office, to ask her whether having Pretty is
my natural fall- I mean, it ensures death. Or perhaps, I do not
know, since I do not have reproductive rights, Pretty has no
right to exist. Then I have all the reasons to thoroughly laugh
at the October 8th foreigners who did such a silly thing.
Obviously Pretty does not have a passport, which means that we
cannot go to their place of "award ceremony" to die.
Concerning my rights, I have a lot of questions. Are there any
lawyers who can help me?
